All About The Mental Illness Called Bipolar Disorder

Written by admin. Posted in Cognitive Disorders

Mental illness is one of the neurological aspects of the bipolar disorder which is synonymous with cognitive disorders although it is a term that refers to the mental and psychological condition of the victims who suffer from the disorder. Generally, people who suffer from this mental condition display abnormal behavior patterns which range from mild to extreme mood disorders. This condition is believed to have been in existence thousands of years ago although understanding on its nature was made possible with the advancement in psychiatry and medicine.

Despite the tremendous progress in research which has shed much light on this condition, people still hold on to misconceptions and myths which have been very detrimental especially to victims. Some irrational arguments that have been propagated about this disease are built on age old fallacies that are linked to witchcraft. It is not very clear when this condition becomes manifest but mental health experts believe that, this condition becomes evident after puberty. This condition is characterized by below average intellectual output, memory loss, poor motor coordination and incoherence in speech.

As a major attribute of bipolar condition, mental illness is also linked to other related conditions such as anxiety, chronic depression, panic attacks and cognitive disorders. There are several factors that contribute to the development of bipolar mental illness. Key of them all is the genetic transfer from parents to children. This actually accounts for a significant number of all reported cases of this disorder. This condition can also be exacerbated by environmental factors. During their formative years, victims may display little or no symptoms of mental illness but as they mature and reach adulthood the symptoms of this condition becomes more manifest. Everything that happens in the lives of the victims contribute to the eventual manifestation of this disease and, therefore, when undergoing diagnosis, victims are taken through their past to reflect on significant events in their lives that may have contributed to their current state.

There are many organizations that help individuals that suffer from this mental condition to cope. Once diagnosis is made and the results are positive victims go for talk therapy first before they get treatment. The prevalence of this condition in respect to modern day pressures has prompted many people to seek medical attention. Quality medication is available to treat this condition hence complete recover is possible. Normally treatment encompasses medication, nutrition and diet, relaxation techniques, and lifestyle change.

The Mental illness Fraud, Label Jars Not People

Written by admin. Posted in Psychotic Disorders

The mental illness fraud by psychiatry. There is no scientific proof nor test that proves that mental illness exists. Sue was given l5 different bogus mental disorders from the DSM IV book used by psychiatrists when she was in and out of psychiatric hospitals in Ontario Canada from 1972-90. Most psychiatrists routinely use the DSM IV book (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) to diagnose their patients. Sue discusses the DSM IV book with all its bogus classifications, by picking everyday problems and classifying them as mental illnesses/disorders ie Nightmare Disorder, Nicotene Dependence Disorder, Stuttering Disorder, Mathematical Disorder, Bereavement Disorder, and the list goes on. The DSM IV book written by The American Pyschiatric Association (APA) lists over 200 so called mental disorders and list codes with every classification in order to get paid by a 3rd party ie insurance companies, and health ministries etc. Books to read exposing that mental illness does not exist: “They Say You’re Crazy: how the world’s most powerful psychiatrists decide who’s normal” – by Paula J. Caplan “The Myth of Mental Illness” – by Thomas Szasz” “Toxic Psychiatry” -by Dr. Peter R. New Video about Unawareness of Mental Illness Released to Mark Mental Health Awareness Month

Written by admin. Posted in Cognitive Disorders

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

A new four-minute video featuring dramatic footage from an interview with a mentally ill man who killed two U.S. Capitol police officers while trying to protect the nation from cannibals has been released by the Treatment Advocacy Center to mark the annual observance of Mental Health Awareness Month.

Unawareness of ones own mental illness clinically known as anosognosia is the leading reason that people with brain diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder dont take the medications that could stabilize them, said Doris A. Fuller, executive director of the Treatment Advocacy Center.

Until policy makers and the public recognize that affected individuals are medically unable to seek care voluntarily, these people will continue to suffer, and society will continue to pay for the homelessness, arrests, incarcerations, hospitalizations, victimization and violent acts that result from non-treatment

E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., executive director of the Stanley Medical Research Institute and narrator of the video entitled Anosognosia, reports that approximately 50% of those with schizophrenia and 40% of those with bipolar experience anosognosia, a syndrome that is widely acknowledged in connection with other medical conditions.

We recognize it for Alzheimers disease, but we seem to have trouble recognizing that this is common for people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Torrey explains in the video.

The video provides a rare glimpse of what active anosognosia looks like. In it, Capitol Hill shooter [Russell Weston details his cannibalism and other delusional thinking but insists he is not mentally ill. Weston was never tried for the 1998 killings and remains hospitalized for paranoid schizophrenia.

The Treatment Advocacy Center is the only national nonprofit focused exclusively on eliminating legal and other barriers to treatment for people with the most severe mental illnesses. Among those barriers are laws and policies that pose obstacles to court-ordered treatment as a means of stabilizing individuals too ill to seek treatment before tragedies occur.

Birmingham Maple Clinic Reports on Link between Mental Illness and Serious Health Conditions

Written by admin. Posted in Eating Disorders

Birmingham, MI (PRWEB) April 27, 2012

Birmingham Maple Clinic, providers of mental health treatment in Michigan, recently reported that adults who reported any type of mental illness in the past year were more likely to also suffer from asthma, heart disease or stroke. The Michigan mental health clinic, citing the results of a recent study conducted by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), reported that many adults in the US who have reported a mental illness during the last year also reported a physical condition. In the study, 22% of adults who had reported a recent mental illness also suffered from high blood pressure, nearly 16% had asthma and 9% suffered from diabetes. Comparatively, the number of adults who suffered from these diseases but who didnt report a mental illness was significantly lower.

According to Lori Edelson, Birmingham Maple Clinic spokesperson, seeing the large number of adults with mental illness and a serious medical condition should speak to the importance that the medical community should be placing on both physical and mental well-being. Edelson said, As emergency rooms and medical clinics are being flooded with patients who suffer from mental illnesses and other conditions, its time for the medical community to start asking themselves what they can do better in terms of disease prevention and treating patients from an all-around wellness point of view.

Birmingham Maple Clinic has been specializing in mental health services in Michigan since for over 30 years, providing services for individuals, couples, families, groups and the community. The clinic provides treatment for a variety of psychological conditions, including child and adult ADHD, anxiety and panic disorders, chronic illness, depression, grief and loss, eating disorders, substance abuse, sexual addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and marriage, family and relationship counseling. Afflictions: Culture & Mental Illness in Indonesia, Volume 1: Psychotic Disorders

Written by admin. Posted in Psychotic Disorders

“Afflictions: Culture & Mental Illness in Indonesia” is a documentary film series that examines the lives of severely mentally ill people living on the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java. At once scholarly treatises and cinematic narratives captured with Hollywood-quality production values, “Afflictions” is based on more than a decade of clinical ethnographic research conducted by documentary filmmaker and anthropologist Dr. Robert Lemelson. Each of the six films—”Memory of My Face,” “The Bird Dancer,” “Family Victim,” “Ritual Burdens,” “Shadows and Illuminations” and “Kites & Monsters”— tells the story of the diagnosis, care and treatment an Indonesian suffering from a mental disorder and looks at the impact of culture, family and community on the course of their illness. Themes emerge with universal impact: how family members treat the mentally ill shapes outcomes, both positive and negative; culture has the power to protect and buffer the mentally ill or exacerbate their condition; to understand the experience of the mentally ill, it is essential to understand their cultural universe and values; and finally, pharmaceutical treatment can be effective or unsuccessful.

A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness

A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness

A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness

“A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness is an intellectual ‘tour de force’. Rogers and Pilgrim cogently dismantle professional pretensions towards mastery of mental illness, and in their place construct compelling arguments for the need to focus on the social, economic and political determinants of mental well-being.”
Professor Chris Dowrick, University of Liverpool, UK

  • How do we understand mental health problems and the concept of happiness in their social context?
  • How have sociologists theorized and researched mental health and illness? A former BMA Medical Book of the Year award winner, this book provides a sociological analysis of major areas of mental health and illness and helps students to develop a critical approach to the subject. This new edition is fully updated, taking into consideration changes in the areas of sociology, social psychiatry and policy analysis and changes to policy and therapeutic law.

A new chapter entitled ‘public mental health and the pursuit of happiness’, reflects the recent focus on the creation of mentally healthy societies.

A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness 4/e is a key teaching and learning resource for undergraduates and postgraduates studying a range of medical sociology and health-related courses, as well as trainee mental health workers in the fields of social work, nursing, clinical psychology and psychiatry.
