What causes eating disorders? The development of an eating disorder is multifactoral, says Barbara Alderete, LCSW, LPC, LMFT, an eating disorder therapist at Texas Health Springwood Hospital. There seems to be a genetic component, a psychological personality pattern component, and the experience of trauma or abuse during childhood. Also, family dynamics and the culture are a big factor. Participation in programs or activities that may emphasize body type, such as cheerleading, gymnastics, dancing, running, acting, modeling, may also be associated. One of the biggest risk factors is dieting during the teen years. Texas Health Resources www.TexasHealth.org 1-877-THR-WELL Video Rating: 5 / 5

If people strict to go through the next 5 stages of recovery, they can assure themselves an easier and shorter way recovery from a post psychotic depression:
1) Getting out of bed
One of the most common characteristic of people who suffer from post psychotic depression is the unwillingness to get out of bed. If you really want to recover from that depression, you should force yourself to do so even though it seems like an impossible task.
2) Doing the opposite
When you suffer from depression, your body and mind tend to channel your actions into minimum waste of energy as if you don’t want to do deeds that are not necessary for your survival. In order to fight back you should not tempt to accept these thoughts and force yourself to take actions and not to give-up.
3) Being occupied
In order to not thinking about your depression all day long, you should find a steady occupation that will help you with it. This kind of occupation will also give you the reason to get up in the morning and to begin your daily routine. Any occupation is fine; it can be a job, a class, a club meeting, and a course etc.
4) Making company

Anxiety is the result of our brains working overtime and magnifying small issues into major problems. This article will help you learn to relieve anxiety naturally with meditation.
Nervousness, tension and the fear you experience, results in anxiety. Anxiety causes unhappiness and is brought about in many ways, some of which are:
1) Being mortally afraid of failing in an exam even though you have prepared for it.
2) Waiting for the results to appear.
3) Making conversation with unknown people endlessly.
4) Conjuring up the worst scenario when you are undergoing a slight fever.
Anxiety is created when you experience one or more of the above causes. You cannot ignore this “feeling,” even though it is not “real.” Many depressed patients put their problems down to anxiety, which can be cured with meditation.
How can one get rid of Anxiety? Start by investigating every activity that you are involved in. You should be able to pinpoint where you are going wrong. Is it necessary for you to be undergoing such stress? This mode of self-searching will help you learn a lot of things. You may be surprised with the numerous activities that take up your time. Is what you are doing absolutely necessary? You will probably be stunned at the amount of stuff you are trying to cope with. By giving this a lot of thought, you have begun the process of self-introspection, which itself, is a form of meditation. Slowly, over a period, you will be able to identify why you are anxious, due to meditation.
Make light of problems to succeed. Fill your body with positive vibrations and meditation. This will ease your tension and help you relax. Learn to take things in your stride and do not lose courage. Instruct your brain to work for you positively, so that your anxiety levels diminish.
If you are determined to cure problems related to anxiety, cultivate awareness. Shift headquarters if you are getting overly restless. Move in with your mom or dear friends if you can, or travel to a religious site. Change of atmosphere can make you ease your anxiety.
On no account, should you use pills or other types of medication to try and find solace. Your brain is unable to perform normally, due to temporary feelings of anxiety, which cloud the thinking. If you hone in on your breathing exercises you will be able to make your brain come alive again with meditation. This in turn, will dispel anxiety and let you function as an energetic, normal human being again.

I subscribe to a number of daily newsletters. One from this morning dealt with an issue many boomers are facing today. When is it time to take the car keys away from your elderly parent?
The writer of the article described his father as having dementia and being very difficult to deal with. The older man insisted on continuing to drive his car despite some serious accidents. “He’s a terrible driver, and I know he’s going to hurt himself and probably someone else. What can I do to get him off the road?”
As our parents grow older, occasional memory lapses are natural, but dementia is a very serious medical condition that impairs a person’s judgment. If you know that your parent is in danger of hurting themselves or others, you have no choice, you must take action.
In our family we’ve had to deal with this in a variety of ways. When my aunt of 82 went missing for an entire day because she had driven herself downtown and couldn’t find her way back, her son decided it was time to act. He wanted to treat her with respect and not dictate what she could or could not do. He tried to talk to her about it, leaving the decision to stop driving to her. But she stubbornly insisted she was fine. Knowing she would never stop unless her car was disabled, he quietly removed her car’s alternator. The next day when she went to start the car, the engine wouldn’t turn over. When she told her son about it, he put her off, saying he would get the car fixed, but of course he never did. Instead he volunteered to drive her whenever he could and arranged for the Senior Center Van to pick her up for her weekly shopping trips. Although she had lost some of her independence she was satisfied that she could still do her errands and visit her friends.
In my father’s case, we were very lucky. By the time he was in his early 80′s it was clear he should no longer be driving. One day he drove his buddies to their monthly church meeting and parked the car nearby. The car was stolen. Honest. We did not arrange the theft, but were grateful it had happened. No confrontation necessary. He decided a new car wasn’t worth the effort or money and let it all go.
In both these instances the elder parent finally came to peace with the decision not to drive. But if your parent’s driving is becoming of grave concern to you and they will not voluntarily stop taking the car, you may have to call your local motor vehicle department and report the problem. It’s not the easiest solution, but as an outside authority, they may be able to convince the older person to stop getting on the road.

Researchers at The Long Island Brain Tumor Center at Neurological Surgery, P.C. (NSPC) are testing a personalized cancer vaccine known as DCVax-Brain a unique treatment made from patients own cells with patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. The Phase II study is currently enrolling participants, and is being conducted at Neurological Surgery, P.C. offices in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, New York. The Long Island Brain Tumor Center at NSPC is the only study site on Long Island.
Because glioblastoma is the most aggressive type of brain cancer, we want to make sure our patients have the latest available treatments, as well as access to a large portfolio of experimental therapies, says neuro-oncologist Jai Grewal, M.D., principal investigator on the study and co-director of The Long Island Brain Tumor Center. We decided to offer this clinical trial because preliminary data from earlier studies showed DCVax improved survival.
Co-investigators on the study include neuro-oncologist J. Paul Duic, M.D., co-director of The Long Island Brain Tumor Center, and neurosurgeons Jeffrey A. Brown, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.N.S., Lee Tessler, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.N.S., and Ramin Rak, M.D. A number of Long Island hospitals are collaborating with the Center on this study.
There are signs of alcoholism you must identify in order to avoid living with an alcoholic. No child ever says “When I grow up I want to be an alcoholic” – or marry one. Yet, too many people today find themselves either having an alcohol abuse addiction or living with an alcoholic. Alcoholism mainly develops gradually and undetected until later stage when life “suddenly” becomes a nightmare. However, there are many signs of alcoholism you can watch for that indicate possible alcohol addiction.
One of the first signs of alcoholism is a high tolerance for alcohol. This can indicate that an individual has a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. If your loved one is capable of drinking until dawn, you may end up living with an alcoholic later in life if early alcoholic intervention does not take place.
In the beginning when most people start drinking, it takes only little to get the effect of the alcohol. Over time, they need more and more alcohol to achieve the same buzz. Even without the genetic disposition, this type of drinker can develop other signs of alcoholism as their alcohol tolerance increases.
If that person has begun drinking alone, drinking secretly or making excuses to drink, you are right to be worried as these, in combination with others, are signs of alcoholism. There is a difference between a reason and an excuse. Reasons are reasonable. An excuse is what the alcoholic will intentionally create to justify drinking. A common excuse from those with an alcohol addiction is “I’ve had a hard day, I deserve this drink!” but it never stops at one drink as the alcoholic empties one glass – or bottle – after another. There is also “You don’t know what my work is like! Drinking helps me deal with my problems!” This leads to the opposite outcome where the alcoholic avoids dealing with his or her life and culminates with you living with an alcoholic.
Other signs of alcoholism includes your loved one has been in trouble for an alcohol-related crime yet continues to drink. According to many treatment centers and mental health experts, this is one of the classic signs of alcoholism. Drinking and driving is one of the most common legal struggles that alcoholics get involved in.
You may be living with an alcoholic if your loved one has an inability to moderate or stop drinking. Perhaps the person have genuinely intended to stop drinking for periods of time in the past but just could not stay away from the alcohol. Or, when one glass leads to another and then a few empty bottles later, it may be followed by violent episodes… yet another of many signs of alcoholism. If you, or your children, are victims of violence, it is critical that you protect yourself (and the children) and leave until it is safe to return!
If you observe these various signs of alcoholism in your loved one, you are right to be concerned and you do need to take action now to avoid ending up living with an alcoholic. Get to know the other signs of alcoholism and learn more about how to help yourself when living with an alcoholic so you can change the situation before it becomes much worse.
Intercepting the signs of alcoholism in their early stages of appearance protects you from ending up living with an alcoholic later on in your life. No matter how advanced the situation is you must take action now. If you treat it as if you already are living with an alcoholic you will have huge advantage and be very effective in dealing with any signs of alcoholism in your home. Before digging into Thanksgiving dinner, it is customary to take a moment to give thanks for the people and events that positively shape our lives. But, as the November 2011 issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter reveals, it may be beneficial to express gratitude on a more regular basis.
Research shows that gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Reflecting on what one is grateful for results in more positive emotions, greater satisfaction from good experiences, improved health, greater ability to deal with adversity, and stronger relationships.
Editor in Chief Dr. Michael Miller notes that whether someone is thankful for past blessings, present happenings, or is focused on remaining positive for the future, expressing gratitude forces him to refocus on what he has instead of what he lacks. And, while any expression of gratitude is likely to boost morale, like a muscle, this mental state grows stronger with use and practice.
This months issue reviews the benefits of gratitude and offers advice on how to cultivate this state of mind, from writing a thank you note to praying or meditating.
